What causes Emetophobia?
Do you have an irrational fear of being ill? Perhaps the thought of someone near you being unwell makes you panic? If so, you might have emetophobia (also known as ‘vomit phobia’, phagophobia or specific phobia of vomiting.)
Most of all, you might think that you are the only person in the world who thinks like this, but emetophobia is more common than you think. Approximately 3-5% of the population is suffering from it. Most are suffering alone because you will want to hide it from friends and family.
Emetophobia is caused by a feeling of not being in control in situations and being fearful of making a fool of yourself. You will also have an extreme fear of not being able to cope with being sick or in many other situations.
Can emetophobia be cured?
Yes, the good news is that you’re not alone and you can overcome it completely with The Thrive Programme. Most noteworthy, this programme is the most successful treatment for a phobia of being sick. This is proven from this research paper. In addition, on average it takes only 6-8 weeks for sufferers to be free of this debilitating and isolating phobia. Jane was unable to go to the supermarket, shopping was a major trauma (so she simply ordered online) and slowly became more and more reluctant to go outside. In addition, Jane preferred to take the safe option of staying in her house. This meant that she didn’t have to face problems or clean everywhere when she returned. Also, Jane strategically planned all trips before-hand. Consequently, she would map out any possible scenarios to fully prepare herself or went only to places she considered ‘safe’.
She washed clothes at 60 degrees or higher to ensure she removed any contaminants. Because of the constant washing and excessive showering, her skin was terrible and her hands looked like those of a 90 year old. ‘What if’ was her favourite phrase and cleaning ‘just in case’ was part of her daily routine. Consequently, life was really bad and not just for her but for all of those around her.
Most noteworthy, Jane had tried CBT and found it extremely difficult due to the exposure therapy. As a result, it was unsuccessful.
A very important aspect of emetophobia is significant others – i.e. those loved ones around you that unwittingly support and help to maintain your phobia. This point is discussed at a Thrive Conference where one of my clients, Jane Bonsall presented with her close friend Maggie. Jane had overcome emetophobia with me.
